3 Tips For Finding A Reputable Electrician For Your Home Or Business
In just about any trade or service profession you get good and bad service providers. It is up to you to do some due diligence and ensure that you are getting the expertise and the professionalism that you should expect from an electrician that you hire for your home or your business.
There are three different types of electricians – apprentice, journeyman and master.
An apprentice electrician has received some training and is undergoing training and practicing under a master electrician. An apprenticeship may last anywhere from 3 to five years during which time they are not allowed to work without direct supervision of a journeyman and overall supervision of a master electrician.
Once they have completed their apprenticeship as well as training in electrical theory and building codes, they will be assessed and examined before they can become a licensed journeyman. An experienced journeyman may take a masters exam upon which they can become a licensed master electrician. It takes a minimum of 7 years of training before taking the master electrician exam and some states even require the completion of an electrical engineering degree.
It is recommended to select a journeyman that works under a master electrician and ensure that both are qualified and licensed. It is rare that a master electrician will perform any basic electrical tasks.
2. Skills and Experience
The different types of electricians have varying levels of skills and expertise. It is not necessary to hire a master electrician for basic electrical work or repairs where a journeyman or even apprentice would suffice. Keep in mind that a master will charge much more to perform the same task and it is therefore advisable to match the skill and experience of an electrician to the job at hand.
Master electricians normally only work on larger construction projects, system design and may be necessary to obtain any permits. Be aware that a master may require a Contractor’s Electrical Licence in addition to their Master Electrician Licence to work on extensive construction projects.
Social media and the internet have made assessing the reputation of tradesman such as electricians easy. Just a quick online search will reveal comments, complaints and compliments related to a specific electrician. Asking friends, acquaintances or relatives is not only a good way to assess reputation but also the best way to find a reputable electrician near you.
However, when getting these types of referrals or references, it is best to ensure that the person making the recommendation has actually used the electrician and had a good experience. It is not advisable to simply hire an electrician because they are a friend of a friend or a relative.
Always keep in mind that safety is absolutely critical when it comes to electricity and electrical jobs. It is therefore very important to make sure that the electrician you hire, whether for home or business work, can provide the level of expertise that is required plus a little extra.
